A Study of Student Movements in Taiwan (1990-2015)

The return of Taiwan to the embrace of the motherland and the realization of the complete reunification of the motherland are the common aspiration of all Chinese, and it is also the fundamental interest of the Chinese nation. It is inevitable to unify the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, but there are many factors that affect the peaceful development of cross-strait relations. The current political ecology of the island is very complicated, and various political forces are competing with each other. Among the many forces that influence the direction of the island's political situation, the young students’ movement plays an important role, and in recent years, it has increasingly shown its enormous social mobilization energy, and has posed new challenges to the integration and development of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

The "Wild Lily Student Movement" in 1990 was the first large-scale student movement on non-campus issues that erupted after the full lifting of restrictions in Taiwan society, and created a new era of Taiwan's student movement. Since then, Taiwan's student movement has gradually moved away from the student identity-based movement of the 1980s, which solely focused on the struggle for campus freedom and democratic rights, and has become increasingly socialized and politicized. Since then, a series of influential student movements, such as the "New Wild Lily Student Movement" in 2004, the "Wild Strawberry Movement" in 2008, and the "Anti-media Monoply Movement" in 2012, the "Sunflower Movement" in  2014, the"Anti-AIIB Movement" and the "Anti-Curriculum Movement" in 2015, have embarked on the path of mass political movements with clear political issues. The development of these movements has not only caused great social repercussions on the island, but also has influenced the policy trend of the Taiwan authorities to a large extent, and once impacted the normal development of cross-strait relations.

Looking back at the development of the student movement in Taiwan over the past 25 years, we can see that the student movement in Taiwan in the new era has shown the following trends: in terms of the characteristics of outbreaks, the frequency (the time interval of occurrence), breadth (the scope of operation and influence), and intensity (the degree of destructiveness) of the student movement in Taiwan have all shown a rising trend to varying degrees; in terms of the mobilization structure of the student movement, the student movement has gradually broken away from the traditional interpersonal mobilization In terms of the mobilization structure of the movement, the movement has gradually moved away from the traditional interpersonal mobilization and tend to be more networked organization, and the uncertainty and autonomy of the student movement have increased significantly; in terms of the movement's effects, the student movement has repeatedly demonstrated its powerful energy and social influence, and its ability to influence the island's political situation has continued to rise, becoming the most influential key political factor in Taiwan's new social movement; in terms of the basic positions and values of the movement, in the past 25 years, the development of the movement has been characterized by a blend of rationalism and irrationalism, but irrationalism has gradually became strong; the Chinese national consciousness is intertwined with Taiwan's sense of "localization," but separatism and exclusivism are on the rise, filled with obvious feelings of "fear", "hatred" and "anti-China", which have had an extremely negative impact on the peaceful and stable development of cross-strait relations.

In the development trend of Taiwan's student movement in the new era, a very alarming phenomenon is that the issues of the movement are gradually change from the internal issues of Taiwan to cross-strait issues, and moreover, cross-strait issues and mainland elements are more and more likely to become the tipping point of the student movement, and the feelings of "fear", "hatred" and "anti-China" highlighted by the movement have become increasingly strong, and the illusory pursuit of democracy by some of the young students cannot conceal their political mentality of "hating unification and advocating independence". This objectively reflects that the peaceful development of cross-strait relations is increasing and deepening its impact on Taiwan's society, and is also a great challenge to the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and in fact, it has already begun to hinder the integration and development of cross-strait economy, constantly eroding the foundation of cross-strait political mutual trust and interaction, tearing apart the national feelings shared by the Chinese across the Taiwan Strait, and may eventually endanger the peaceful reunification of the motherland.

It is foreseeable that many different forms of student movements in Taiwan will continue to erupt, and the impact will continue to exist, which will become a long-term social phenomenon in the process of cross-strait reunification. For this, we can neither turn a blind eye, nor can we make a great fuss.

For the development of cross-strait relations, the flourishing of student movements in Taiwan is both a challenge and an opportunity. On the one hand, the loss of rationality constantly highlighted by the student movement has set up various obstacles to the development of cross-strait relations, which will inevitably have many adverse effects on the peaceful reunification process of the motherland. This is a new war in front of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, which is to some extent more subtle and difficult to deal with than the previous political confrontation and military confrontation between the two sides.

On the other hand, the tremendous energy of the student movement indicates that Taiwan's young students have become an important social force on the stage of Taiwan's civil society, and are becoming a key factor that influences the future direction of Taiwan's politics. If we can make the best use of situation and strive for Taiwan's youth to understand the inevitable trend of the unification of the motherland and the historical mission they shouldered, we can definitely shorten the historical process of peaceful reunification.

Therefore, we should not only dialectically and objectively analyze the nature of the student movement, alert to the possible crisis in Taiwan caused by the student movement, but also calmly and prudently treat the development of the student movement, take more positive and prudent measures to do a good job with Taiwan youth, and try to turn the crisis of the student movement into an opportunity for peaceful reunification.

First, we should change the focus of work and insist on placing our hope on the people of Taiwan in the strategy of promoting the unification of the motherland. And currently, we should place more hope on the youth of Taiwan and take the road of cultivating the youth.

Secondly, on the basis of continuing to strengthen the original identity of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait with the common Chinese bloodline and traditional Chinese culture as the core, we should keep pace with the times to construct a group identity with youth subculture as the core and the China dream identity with the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as the core, and lead the youth on both sides of the Taiwan Strait from interaction to mutual trust with a constructive identity.

Finally, we should pay attention to the real needs of Taiwan youth, explore and build an effective benefit-sharing mechanism mainly for Taiwan as soon as possible, which is small and medium enterprises, middle and lower class, residents in the middle and south part of Taiwan, turn the socialist ideals of common prosperity and fairness and justice into concrete actions, and play a "silent" trickle-down effect with an equal and down-to-earth attitude. "The "trickle-down effect" is to gradually realize the linkage of economic interests across the Taiwan Strait and the emotional resonance of the people across the Taiwan Strait from the bottom up, so that the social ideals of the mainland and the moral values of the people of Taiwan can interact and strive to build a community of destiny that conforms to the historical trend, the requirements of the times and the hearts of the people, and to effectively practice the "One family across the Taiwan Strait". On the basis of firmly grasping the leading and initiative cross-strait relations and in the historical process of promoting the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, we will solve the Taiwan issue as soon as possible and realize the complete reunification of the motherland.
