中評社香港5月21日電／美國總統布什和夫人勞拉當地時間20日前往中國駐美國大使館，弔唁中國四川汶川大地震的遇難者，並表示美國時刻准備著以中國所希望的方式提供援助。
新華社報道，布什對在場的中美記者說，他和夫人勞拉代表美國人民向遭受地震災害的中國人民致以誠摯的慰問。他說，在這個悲痛的時刻，美國人民與中國人民站在一起，並為中國地震遇難者及其親人祈禱。
布什在弔唁簿上寫道，他對中國人民在抗震救災中表現出的慷慨互助精神和堅強品格表示欽佩。美國時刻准備著以中國所希望的方式提供援助。勞拉也在弔唁簿上留言，表達美國人民對中國人民的“愛與慰問”。
留言之後，布什夫婦和中國駐美國大使周文重夫婦一起在使館“沉痛哀悼‘5.12’地震罹難者”的條幅前默哀。
布什還向周文重大使表示，他期待著不久後在日本舉行八國集團與發展中國家領導人對話會期間以及北京奧運會期間，與中國國家主席胡錦濤進行會晤。
布什弔唁留言：“敬佩中國人民人格”
布什與夫人勞拉在弔唁冊上寫下整頁悼念字句，全文如下：
On behalf of the American people, Laura and I extend our sincere condolences to the Chinese people who have suffered as a result of the earthquake that shock your country.
We stand with you during this tragic moment as you mourn the loss of so many of your loved ones and search for those still missing. I admire the generosity of spirit and the strength of character shown by the Chinese people as you confront this natural disaster.
Our country stands ready to assist in any manner that China deems helpful.
