A. Military Strength
By June 30, 2015, the overall strength of the US Armed Forces is 2,915,000 personnel, among which 1,303,000 are in AC, 819,000 in Reserve Components (RC), and 793,000 as civilian employees.
The overall strength of the Army is 1,287,000, among which 487,000 are in AC, accounting for37.4% of its overall strength. The Army AC is organized into 8 army group headquarters, 3 corps headquarters, 11 divisions including 33 combatant brigades, 3 separate regiments, 41 support brigades and 55 functional brigades. It is equipped with over 5,800 main battle tanks, over 31,600 armored personnel carriers (APCs), about 5,900 guns of various types, and more than 4,300 aircraft (mainly helicopters); The Army RC has 549,000 personnel in total, organized into 8 divisions, 18 combatant and functional commands, 19 support commands, and 4 training commands; and the total number of civilian employees is 259,000.
The Navy has a total strength of 801,000 personnel. Among it, 508,000 are in AC (with 185,000 marines), accounting for 39% of its total strength (14.2% marines). The USN is organized into 2 fleets:Pacific and Fleet Forces Command which include 11 carrier strike groups, 3 expeditionary strike groups 9 carrier air wings and 4 submarine groups. The USMC is organized into 3 marine divisions, 3 marine air wings and 3 marine service support groups. The USN is equipped with 285 warships (including 10 aircraft carriers, 72 submarines, 90 surface combat warships, 30 amphibious warships and 83 other vessels), 3,812 aircraft of various types (1,676 of them are combat aircraft), 236 submarine-launched strategic missiles, 447 tanks, 1,300 advanced amphibious assault vehicles and 1500 guns. The naval RC has 96,000 personnel and is organized into 22 reserve force squadrons, 2 navy supply support battalions, 12 navy cargo handling battalions, 6 naval reserve construction regiments, 1 Marine Corps reserve division, 1 Marine Corps reserve air wing, and 1 service support group. The US Navy has 197,000 civilian employees.
The Air Force has a total strength of 660,000 personnel, 308,000 of which are in active service, accounting for 23.6% of its total strength. The active component of the Air Force is organized into 14 air forces, 68 flying wings, 5 space wings, and 3 missile wings, with 194 flying
squadrons, and 9 ICBM squadrons. It is equipped with 3,987 aircraft of various types (including 141 bombers, 1,273 fighters/attackers, 444 sentry and sentinel surveillance aircraft, 410 transport aircraft and 244 tankers), and 441 ICBMs. The reserve component of the Air Force has 174,000 personnel. The Air National Guard is organized into 90 wings and 7 groups, and is equipped with 1,086 aircraft. The Air Force Reserve is organized into 34 wings and 8 groups, and is equipped with 360 aircraft. The US Air Force has 178,000 civilian employees.
The Coast Guard, with 40,100 personnel in active service, is under the command of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in peacetime and transferred under the command of USN at war. The DoD has a civilian work force of 167,000 personnel.
B. Global Force Deployment
By June 30, 2015, of the 1,303,000 AC, 1,068,000 are deployed in Continental United States (CONUS), and 235,000 are deployed overseas.
The USA:5 army group headquarters, 3 corps headquarters, 9 divisions, and 2 separate brigades, 3 separate regiments, with a total strength of 400,000 personnel are deployed in CONUS.
3 army group headquarters, 2 divisions, and 2 separate brigades, with a total strength of around 87,000 personnel are deployed overseas. Among the overseas deployment, 1 army group headquarters and 2 divisions, with an overall strength of 56,100 personnel are deployed in the Pacific region; 2 army group headquarters and 2 separate brigades, with an overall strength of 28,500 personnel, are stationed in Europe; 1,750 personnel are deployed in the Middle East, South
Asia, and North Africa; 90 personnel are deployed in central and southern Africa; and 540 personnel are deployed in central and southern America.
The USN (Marine Corps included):2 numbered fleets, 7 carrier air wings, 2 Marine divisions, 2 Marine air wings, 145 vessels, 1,454 aircraft, 236 submarine-launched ballistic missiles are deployed in CONUS with a total strength of 426,000 personnel. 4 numbered fleets, 2 carrier air wings, 1 Marine division, 1 Marine air wing, 140 vessels, and 222 aircraft are deployed overseas with an overall strength of 82,000 personnel. Among the naval forces deployed overseas, 1 numbered fleet, 1 carrier air wing, 1 Marine division, 1 Marine air wing, 90 vessels, and 152 aircraft are deployed in the Pacific region with an overall strength of 63,500 personnel; 1 numbered fleet, around 10 vessels are deployed in Europe with an overall strength of 8,250 personnel; 1 numbered fleet, 1 carrier air wing, 40 warships, and 70 aircraft are deployed in the Middle East, South Asia, and North Africa with an overall strength of 8,950 personnel; 250 personnel are deployed in central and southern Africa; and 1 numbered fleet and 740 personnel are deployed in central and southern America.
